He was an honest cop, forced out by Damon's subterfuge, came back to avenge Leonardo's death

He was not part of the mob! HE was a dick but he was a good police officer! He killed Matt Damon because he hated him. Martin Sheen was killed because of him...Matt Damon was the Rat and was looking for himself and tried to force Mark to give him his secret files. He refused because he knew that if he did Leonardo would be exposed and he didn't want to risk that. When Leonardo's character was killed in the end by trying to arrest Matt Damon, after Matt had erased him from the police records so he could **** with him... THEN after he was killed Matt Damon has the balls to say that he recommends Leonardo for the highest bravery award? **** I wanted to shoot the prick myself when he said that! Take your pick of reasons he shot the guy, but he deserved a way worse fate than that..maybe something like the one faced by the rapist sheriff in Pulp Fiction!

Mark Wahlberg's was the deepest inside connection that the mob had in the State Police and he didn't trust Dicaprio's or Damon's characters he was going to kill both of them if Nicholson died because they were both Rats Idk thats what I thought I'm still a little lost on this myself I thought I would try to help with my best understanding

I think it was just he hated Matt Damon's character. All I know is Wahlberg was hilarious in The Departed.

ok he wasnt part of the mob, he was the old F.B.I. guy that was in charge of the undercover agents, and leanardo di caprio's character told him that matt damon's character was a spy and so he was pretty much gettin revenge on him for killing the REAL F.B.I. guys.
