Does it happen everytime you dance? How long does it takes before you sense that happiness? I am asking these questions before if you do prolonged activities such as exercises, your body increases production and release of endorphins. These are neurotransmitter found in the brain that have pain-relieving properties. Pour enough amount of endorphins in your bloodstreams and you will have that feeling of "high", makes you feel good, bliss and a sense of well being. Dancing and other exercises are good therapy for those experiencing sadness or unexplained melancholy.

The passion for the art. I can relate. It's like no matter what kind of mood I'm in all I have to do is turn on a tune and release whatever is going on in my life out through my movement. It takes away all negativity, all the stress of the day, sorrow, pain from a broken heart. When I dance it's like starting the day over. Some people use alcohol, drugs, or whatnot to cope with their life for me it's dancing. It's just a natural high that makes me happy and feel good.

There are a few different things going on. For one, you are getting the blood flowing, sending more oxygen to your brain, making you more awake (alive). Also, dancing usually involves your auditory senses, you dance to music, usually up-beat music. Music is known to affect emotions and when you add physical activity to that positive endorphins (hormones?) are activated. If you are dancing well this is also positive reinforcement to your psyche: everyone feels good when they do something well. Another thing, if you are dancing with someone, you are actually sharing the experience detailed above, which makes it more rich and meaningful, even if the person is a total stranger you are still filling a human need to be connected with other people. Everyone should learn to dance, I think the percentage of suicide and depression would drop if everyone went dancing! :)

Cardio, movement, music all help us feel good. Also, I believe we all have it in us to get lost in the 'trance' of movement to a beat, where it becomes spiritual--body, mind--and we connect more to something bigger, rather than being so in our heads. I am a lazy girl these days (well, I'm a busy Mom), but I long to feel that joy from dance again... Keep on moving!

I don't know. But I'd love to know the answer... I mean it doesn't have any evolutionary value does it? Does it make us happy cause it increases our chances of mating? Is it the human equivalent of a peacock's tail?
