I could never understand why a woman would want to keep an engagement ring if the engagement is called off. Not only that but sometimes the ring is a family heirloom and that really should be returned. Legally, I don't think there are any laws, just common sense without greed.

I dont think there is any kind of Law regarding what you are talking about anywhere in the world. It depends on if you feel right about keeping it or giving it back. My personal opinion is that it is a gift....once a person gives you something then its yours to do with whatever you want to do. If we start giving back gifts when things dont work out then that means we would have to give back Christmas gifts, birthday gifts, easter gifts, etc.
If you feel uncomfortable about keeping it, then give it back. This is a decision only you can make...keep it if it feels right...give it back if it doesnt. I have been married twice and have never given back my engagement and wedding ring......they were a gift to me, they are mine. If my ex husbands wanted them back then I would call them an Indian Giver. But thats my opinion, a lot of people would feel differently.

I did a little research on this when my engagement ended and in most states an engagement ring is a promise to marry it is to be returned to the party that gave it unless said party is nice and really does not want the reminder.

legally, I guess the man, if he baught it. It was meant to be for the person who was going to marry him. If the girl opts out, then she must return the ring. But I think that might be more of a honor code. Legally, a gift is a gift. You cant ask for it back.

I don't think it's written in stone, but if he broke it off, the choice is yours to keep or give the ring back. It was a gift to you afterall. However, if you broke it off, it is only right to at least offer to give the ring back to him.

If he calls the wedding off she keeps the ring, if she calls it off she returns the ring according to all the etiquette books.
