A lot of people prefer to see movies on the big screen. That way, you get the full effect of all the visual artistry they use in the film (CGI, various cinematography) as well as all of the great Dolby sound. It's very difficult (and expensive) to reproduce that in a home theater system.
Yes, some people can be very rude at the movies and the only things you can do are ignore them, report them to theater staff, or threaten them with violence if they don't shut up--and be prepared to carry through with the threat. (I don't seriously recommend the last option. It could get you hurt or thrown in jail.) If you want to avoid rude people, try to attend showings that aren't usually as crowded--matinees, the first showing of the day, the last showing at night, etc. Besides that, unless a theater really enforces rules of audience consideration, there's not much you can do. :^(

Not everyone is rude at the movies, I'm not, or at least I try not to be. To answer your question it is better to go to theater because the movie is on a huge screen and because you get to get out of your house.

I just like the outting..Once when I went to the movies there were about 8 guys behind my friends and I drinking alcohol and yelling stupid stuff all the way through the movie..I believe that we should be able to go to the movies and enjoy ourselves. All the stupid immature people should stay home..

When I go to the movies, I try to go at off times. Fewer people, fewer opportunites to encounter rudeness. The thing that annoys me the most? People talking on cellphones during the movie.

I know some people are so stupid at the theather but there are some movies that you can't just wait to see and it takes forever for the movies to come out on DVD.

i hate cell phones, and teenagers..
neither can keep quiet during a movie.
hell one night a guy took a call and talked louder on the phone then the movie and he was 100 yards or so away.
nearly made me want to go down grab his phone slam it on the ground and crush it.
and people who talk the whole movie are just as annoying./
