After a power failure the computer which is running on Window XP (Home Edition) does not boot up. I press the power button it takes me to the Windows XP screen and shuts down. (Then it restarts, and the process starts all over again) I have tried pressing f10 and f8 to access safemode and that does not work. Do any of you have any ideas of what the problem coudl be?

Possibly a corrupt system file on your hard drive. Try this:
*You'll need your Windows XP CD.
Put XP CD in CD drive & restart computer
Press F12 to get to the boot menu. Select CD-ROM.
Press Enter when the screen reads "Press any key to boot from CD" (or something like that)
Let the Windows installation routine load.
When asked if you want to install XP or repair, select Repair (or Repair Console, or something similar).
This will open a command prompt.
Type chkdsk /f (this checks the hard disk for errors and fixes them)
You'll probably get a message stating that it can't run the check, and asking if you want the scan to run the next time the computer starts.
Press the "y" key followed by the Enter key.
Restart the computer and let the scan run. Once finished, the computer should restart and (hopefully) boot successfully.

Everyone suggested software, check your hardware, power outages have been know to ruin power supplies and the VRM circuitry on the motherboard.

No point in pulling out your hair trying to re-install the OS if the harware is destroyed.

Hi. Go into the BIOS and change the boot order to CD-ROM. Insert the original disk and boot from that.
