hi i anwered your price question. in the last entry. don't worry too much about them in the 6 gallons. if it is filtered they are ok if you do 50% water changes every 5 days or so. they should be fine like that for a few months. no worries -- you have time to save your pennies for a bigger home.

Ohh man that person who told you that has NO freaking clue about fish if they told you 6 gal was ok. Goldfish are little poop machines, and unless you plan on changing the water every day they'll be swimming in their own sewage in no time, and then dying in no time. Even if you don't see the actual poop, they release tons of ammonia which poisons the water. For just two goldfish you could probably get a 30 gallon, but those are still expensive.

My advice? Bring those two goldfish back to the store and get some guppies instead. You can put about 4 nice male guppies in a 6 gallon and not worry about them dying off in a week.

Because goldfish grow to fit their environment, you should generally allow a minimum of about 5 gallons per fish and as much as 10 gallons per fish. I don't think 40-50 gallons are necessary. While they can grow fairly large and are a bit messy (they create a lot of waste) 10-20 gallons should be plenty.

A 10 gallon tank can be found for about $10-15 at most pet stores. A full kit, 10 - 20 gallons, including gravel, a filter and a hood will be closer to $75-$100.

Save up for a bigger tank,at least a 2o-long. a55 with a stand,no other accessories will cost abou t $100 and the store can ship it to you for a $20 charge. A lamp will cost about $80, and filters will cost about $25 each. A smaller tank will cost less, but with a stand will cost almost as much as the 55 with stand. (Try Petland, ) and for equipment there are good mail-order or internet stores that have good deals on accessories.

Oops, just looked it up and a goldfish needs 10-20 gallons of water per fish. Sorry.

Go to yahoo groups and look up freecycle. Find the one closest to your area and put in a wanted add for an aquarium. I have seen lots of them given away by people who no longer want them. The idea of this site is to keep things out of the landfills. Good luck.
