No history of metabolic defects etc...just wondering how many moms got this test performed and if you felt it was neccessary in addition tot he tests the newborn is screened for in the hospital already.

I was planning to pay to get extra screening done for most of the 29 diseases recommended by the March of Dimes. However after a traumatic hospital experience, CPS, and firing both my doctors I never got around to it. Where I live they were only checking for 4 diseases just after I gave birth it went up to 11. So the kit is sitting her for the next baby.

However I do still strongly believe that it is very important and for the discomfort of a heel prick it is totally worth it. Use a heel warmer before they take the sample.

Some info but not the page on that website that I was looking for:

It is a really good idea. These tests screen for things that can be treated. Without treatment the babies with these diseases can die. Knowing can give babies a long healthy life. Both my kids were screened and my third (I'm at 20 weeks) will be screened as well. Many of these defects are recessive meaning that they can show up even with no family history of them. With all this stuff you have to weigh the cost against the benefits, in this case, it is well worth it.

my daughter had it done. i always say it couldn't hurt, just in case. i HATED when they pricked her heel and the card they had to put the samples on was HUGE, it broke my heart to listen to her screaming like that while they squeezed more and more blood out.
my only wish is for them to come up with a more humane way of getting a blood sample!!
