if someone beats me to a question with the answer i was going to say i will leave star for the question but no answer and thumbs up the answer

I've wondered the same thing myself.
Maybe they think the question is good, but feel their answer may be controversial or offensive to someone, which they would rather not be, so instead of posting that answer they just give the question a star.
At least that's what I choose to believe.

I've never paid much attention to the star button unless I think a question is particularly interesting.

some people star the question because they dont know the answer an would like to see the answers.

True. Personally, I think the star thing is stupid altogether. Bring back the thumbs up/ thumbs down. : )
