Most major colleges and universities have an International Exchange Program. Depending on where you are going to college--check with your International Studies department. If you do not have an international studies program at your school, you will have to apply directly to the foreign country's schools which would be difficult and very expensive. I went to the University of Oklahoma which had a reciprocal exchange program. The reciprocal exchange program is basically a "switch students" program. I paid my tuition, room, and board at the university of oklahoma, and someone in Scotland paid their's also. We switched places for a year. All my classes transferred just like I had taken them at OU. Thus, the reciprocal programs are not much more expensive than if you were going to school at home (airfare and spending money are the only extras). Check with your school to see what programs they have available. There is usually an application process to be an international student. You may have to apply and be accepted up to a year prior to when you will be studying abroad. Every school has different protocal and requirements for exchange students. The International Studies office at your school will provide the best answers. You have to get passports, vaccinations, visas, and other documentation to travel and study abroad, depending on the country which you want to go. If accepted into the international studies program as an exchange student, the office of international programs at your school can provide the details of everything you need prior to embarking on this adventure. Good luck--Studying abroad was the greatest experience of my life so far.
