Don McLean, the song is called American Pie, off the album of the same name. It was written in tribute of Buddy Holly, who died in a plane crash in 1959. The plane was named American Pie, and the day of the crash was referred to as 'The Day the Music Died', as the crash also killed singers Ritchie Valens (La Bamba) and The Big Bopper (Chantilly Lace). The song is autobiographical, and was aimed at explaining the pop culture of the time.
