I am buying a house and the furnace is old. I have heard new furnaces cost a fortune since they need all new exhaust tubing. Can one get an old refurbished furnace? If you can, how much do they usually go for (preferably in Canadian currency) ? Thanks a bunch!

I have been in the HVAC business for 23 years. I know of no company that refurbishes furnaces. And why would anyone do it? The liability of a used furnace is not worth the risk that someone could be seriously injured or die. I have seen and witnessed people buying used furnaces from individuals that have had newer furnaces replaced in their own homes, aka.. garage sales and such, but these are usually only a couple of years old. It is not worth the risk to use an older furnace just to save a few dollars, Canadian or American

The best answer that I can give --- Over half the cost of having a furnace put in is the installation costs, I would say "not worth the price" to even think about a a refurbished unit.

If your going all out to buy a new home, why would you trust a refurbished furnace? You'd be surprised on what you could buy a furnace for. Go out and check prices. Go to Home Depot. They were just running a sale on furnace, air conditioners for the winter here in Mi. They also install.

Canada has much more modern laws regarding furnace installation, air intake, etc than the US. I doubt an old furnace would qualify under the new regulations. Yes a new furnace is very expensive (we put one in 2 years ago) but the efficiency is tremendous.........92% compared to an old furnace that might have gotten 40-50%. It may be cheaper (if legal) but you end up paying far more in fuel.

I work in the heating and air conitioning field and I would not trust any company that would sell a refurbished furnace. Buy a new one. and if you buy an 80% efficient furnace you dont need new exhaust tubing unless the old is rusted out.
