Well, when the united states of america (thats the full name) was invented, it consisted of 13 separate states. Up until that point, each of the states acted like little countries of their own.

Today, americans think of themselves as americans. Back then, they thought of themselves as being citizens of their respective states. When they decided to unite the states, that's exactly the way that they thought of it - a union of states.

The leaders of the time weren't big on fancy names. They went for historical and functional ones.

They were making a union of states in north america. So they called it: the United States of America. A simple name that describes exactly what it is.

If you look at the names of the states in the USA, you'll see that those names are much more creative than the name of the country itself, further showing that it is, in fact, a union of separate states at the same time as it is a sovereign nation.

People from the USA call their country "America" because saying "United States of America" is a mouthful. It's just an abbreviation, basically.

It's the United States of America. USA is the acronym for it, and sometimes America is used as a shortened version as well.

I'm not sure I understood your question, but not many countries have the United States as part of their name. They may use "united" like United Kingdom (UK) or United Emirates. And the whole continent is called North America. There's Canada, Mexico, and the United States in North America.

Hope that answered your question.

Mexico is really named "Los Estados Unidos Mexicanos," so I guess we aren't the only ones guilty about that. You other question, regarding our use of the word "America," is valid. The term America was first used to describe the entire western hemisphere back when European cartogrophers were mapping out the new world--it is named after Americo Vespucci. I guess the US decided to use America as a synomym for the USA because they were not well aware that the rest of the hemisphere was already using that term to describe the entire western hemisphere.

1) The USA has a name
2) The name is The United States of America
3) That is the name because all the states are united to form one country.

We are ''The United States of America'', and that is the ''name'' we have chosen.
Don't you remember The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (abbreviated USSR). Ever hear of ''The United Arab Emirates (also the UAE or the Emirates)?'' There are many countries that don't use ''a name'' as you say.
