I'm planning on buying a laptop: either a Toshiba Satellite or a Sony Vaio. Here’s the thing, they are both a $1000, however, the Sony has an Intel Core Dou, and the Toshiba has an Intel Core 2 duo (1.6GHz). What differentiates the two processors? Don’t they both have dual cores?

core duo > t2x00 / t2x50, 32 bit processors

core 2 duo > t5x00 / t7x00, 64 bit processors

64 bit computing is still in infancy & will take at least a years time to get fully functional ... all software have to be 64 bit
not only the processor & the 64 bit version of vista

so for now, it's not an issue
another point i forgot to mention is fsb, which is 667 mhz in the later processors as compared to 533 mhz in the earlier ones
a marginal advantage that

yea, both have dual cores

however the t7x00 stand out & are superior on account of their 4 mb l2 cache & ondate only the t7200 is reasonably priced !
____________

let me clarify, u can still buy 64 bit processor & install 64 bit vista
it will run fine
to enjoy benefits of 64 bit computing ... maybe sometime

either one will be fine , and they both should have 667 mhz fsb, you probably would not notice performance differences under normal use
