There will be someone who has done this professioanly who will most likely respond, but the several times I have laid carpet, I've landed the tack strips 1/4" from the wall with the baseboard removed. I figured that was room to stretcha and tuck the carpet, and the gap is covered easily by new 3/8" base.

So far, so good.

I am no expert but about 1 inch if you remove the floor trim and raise it up about 1/2 inch so the carpet tucks under it for the best fit and look. If you do not remove the floor trim then about 1/2 inch. This is what I have done in my home as I have totally remodeled it including Tile work and new baths and all cabinets in the whole house.

3/4 of an inch then finish it with a carpet strip . these come in wood , plastic, or metal
