The ePass and Sunpass share a reciprocal agreement, so it's not really an issue unless the communications link between the two goes down. Self-customer service seems to be more friendly with Sunpass.
The SunPass, I think, has the greatest number of reciprocal agreements. You can see all the toll agencies that have reciprocal agreements at the web site listed below.
UPDATE: They are NOT all the same. They may work in the same places, but the difference is who the issuing authority is. If you buy one in Orlando, it's an E-Pass, but if you travel in Tampa frequently, and something goes wrong with it, you'll have to take it back to the Orlando/Orange Expressway Authority for service. So...I'd recommend you either buy the SunPass (even in Orlando, you can get it at CVS or Publix), as they're set up for statewide customer service.

RE:
For people in Florida: Sunpass or E-pass?
I cannot seem to get a straight answer on which of these works on more roads. We don't use toll roads enough for discounts to be a big deal, we're just tired of having to stop at toll booths. Can anybody tell me which of these works in the most places? Does E-pass work at all Sunpass...

I have found the service provided by the E-Pass service center superlative, without exception. It s a snap to replace the battery----they provide this service free of charge. Naturally, that service is apparently about to become obsolete with the next generation of transponders slated to be released next month [August 2015]. Still, in the long run, I m glad I chose E-Pass despite the fact that both Publix and CVS both stock and sell Sunpass, even in greater Orlando. I would guess it s also indicative of the fact that I m proud to be from the Orlando area.

The Sunpass works on all the Florida toll roads and is the easiest to use.

They are the same. They all work on the same roads. If you buy it in Orlando, it is called E-pass. If you buy it in Tampa, it is called Sunpass.
It is FDOT's "pre-paid toll" program, and works on all state toll roads
