AVG and Avast are 2 different free antivirus apps from 2 different companies. AVG is easier to use and does not take up a lot of resources. Avast on the other hand is a better scanner but it takes a lot of resources on your PC. Having used both, I am now using a much better antivirus : AVIRA AntiVir PE. This app has better virus detection than AVG and does not take much resource like Avast. Try it and you'll see http://www.free-av.com/

I ll add to a old thread - They are getting desperate and using scare tactics now - DON"T let them in your Computer ! They will block Files and then hound you with phone calls to up date to a very expensive subscription to cure a problem they created. It ll cost your over $170 for them to unlock it or a 3 year for more and a life time (from AVG) for almost $600. I found windows files password protected that I had not put on there and updates were blocked. BTW - the phone calls kept coming from different called I.D. numbers, but always a India or Pakistani accent as were the conversations in the background. IF the shop can fix my computer, I m planning on just sticking with Microsoft s MSE for a free anti virus. There a very similar story on another review site about AVAST - so I ll be deleting them now.

AVG
go here.....
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5
Avg pound for pound is the best out....its free and antiviruses like Norton and Mcafee cant hold a candle to it...it doesnt have as many options as the others but unlike Norton and especially Mcafee if u decide that u dont want it just uninstall it and its all gone.......Mcafee is almost impossible to get rid of.....plus w/ AVG when it finds a problem it shows u were the root of the problem is, which is nice because if for some reason Avg cant delete or quarrentine the issue it shows u exactly where its at in ur comp so u can manually delete it.....updates automatically....totally hands free.....plus its not a resource hog like Norton...Avast is another free one but it doesnt compare to AVG......u wont be disappointed w/ this program.... enjoy :)

No. These are two different products from two different companies. While AVG comes from Grisoft, Avast is the creation of Alwil.
From my experience with these two, Avast is definitely better.
But if you feel otherwise, try AOL's Active Virus Shield. This one is powered by Kaspersky and is very good. It's free and detects many viruses (virii?) undetected by AVG, Avast etc. And of course, it doesn't slow your system's startup down.

You can only run one AV - AVG or Avast delete one - I would delete AVG. Having two AV's will undermine your Security, make your PC slow & could lock up your PC.
