Do people not read books anymore? I have seen so many reviews about how they thought it was a Narnia type movie and because of this they did not like it at all. Sorry, I know I am gripping but it just erks me to hear people make stupid comments about books made into movies and they have not read the book at all!!

I totally understand your point, and as a fan of the book I can relate - but I really, really think the marketing of the movie is to blame.

When I first saw the trailer for "terebithia" I was astonished at how "wrong" it looked. The sound was off on the TV and I thought it was some knockoff lame fantasy movie until I saw the name come up at the end. It seemed like they were going all-out to try to draw in the audiences who made Narnia and LOTR a hit, which completely misses the point of the book. I knew one of two things were going to happen; either the movie missed the point of the book completely, or the movie MARKETING missed the point (probably intentionally) and sold the movie as something more bankable (fantasy genre movie) than what it actually is (realistic friendship story in the vein of "my girl" or "Man in the Moon" with Reese Witherspoon.)

It sounds like the feedback is squarely in the second camp. I called my boyfriend today and his kid brother (13 yrs) wouldn't put him on the phone until he spent 15 minutes telling me how Bridge to Terebithia was the most depressing movie he'd ever seen and how upset he was about it. He finally fessed up that he'd cried and so had his dad. It's not just that he hadn't read the book, it's that neither he OR his dad had any idea it was even BASED on a book and just blithely went to the latest teen fantasy thing at the mall.

Not everyone reads that book anymore- it was published in the 70s, so there are more current newberry winners that the schools and libraries promote. I've read it, but I went to school in the 80s. Nowadays they all read "Holes" and "the Giver" instead.

I say blame the marketing.

The book was one of my favorites growing up, and I do NOT want to see the movie at all; it looks pretty close to ruined. People are going to complain about any Disney movie that isn't all lollipops and cotton candy and fairy tale princess happily ever afters, but too bad for them.

I just saw the movie and it was good, not great but good. It was sad as many movies sometimes are. Reminded me of the movie My Girl with McCully Calkin, where his father was an undertaker. It was that kind of sad. I had never heard of the book. Don't think I would read it anyway.
