In the movie Castaway, what do the angel wings on the Fed Ex package, Bettina's house and her truck have in common? Also, why did Chuck (Tom Hanks's character) paint the angel wings on his sail when he made his raft?

The angel's wings (or eagle's wings) are a symbol that the person who sent the package put on the box. The sender was an artist, and the wings were HER symbol. Chuck (Hanks) never knew what they meant, either, he just knew that they made this one box special, so he never opened it to see what it contained.

At the end of the movie, Chuck returns to the box to its original sender, an artist who did a lot of work with that symbol. The artist is not home, but as Chuck is leaving, a good-looking woman stops to give him directions, and as she is leaving, Chuck notices the same symbol on the back of her truck.

Throughout the movie, Chuck kept a picture of Helen Hunt's character with him, in his watch and painted on the wall of the cave. That was his symbol of hope. When he returned and discovered that his hope had left him, the wings became the symbol of his FUTURE hope. We are left at the end of the movie with the belief (or hope) that Chuck follows the artist-woman back to her home and something happens there for him. You never know what the tide will bring in.

Angel Wings Meaning

I don't think they have a meaning. They were the logo of the woman's business. I think for some reason, Chuck felt that they were inspirational while stranded, like an angel looking over him. I'm interested to find out if someone has an answer.

Many misfortunes, makes one humble.. Too much pride to accept help.. When all seems lost, that's the time when we just think "oh, what the heck.. we've got nothing to lose, so we might as well just give it a try".. It teaches us that nothing was truly lost to begin with.. it just takes calmness.. one should collect his/her thoughts and don't be too stubborn to accept guidance from above ;) yes.. miracles do happen.. you just have to have faith.. It was a nice poem.. I enjoyed it.. :)

"Sailing on Wings".... I cannot help but think that the message for me.. or at least what I read into this beautiful piece of poetry.. is... When all seems lost.. follow your heart (bird) to find your "home".. If you search within your heart, no raging storm can keep you lost forever. There have been times I have felt that I can no longer weather the storm, perhaps of a different kind from which you write, but nevertheless.. I follow the beautiful bird within and "Sail upon my own wings" Beautiful ((((Bri)))) (-:
