I'm a high school junior and I did mega bad first semester with a gpa of 1.71. however, I will definitely get a 3.42 this quarter.

my sat scores aren't so good but I can fix them, so far I got:
M:610
R:500
W:550
Total:1660

my extracurriculars:
*I babysit and tutor young children in a poor neighborhood
*I have a part time job at a bakery
*My friends and I started our own band
*Philosophy club at school

Talents:
* I play NINE musical instruments very well
* I speak 5 languages(English, Spanish, Japanese, Bengali, and
Hindi) and I'm gonna learn mandarin chinese over the summer
* I can draw very well, my art has even been posted up at the rec
center in greenbelt

Also, I'm a U.S citizen(but I am of Indian descent) and I have come a long way from a childhood of poverty and abuse. I'm not seeking pity or anything, but will the fact that I have overcome such hardships make any difference?

With all of this, do you think I can get into umcp?

To be honest, since you did mega bad, you really have to push yourself and do mega good now. Aim for a 4.0 gpa and if you don't get there, that's ok because hopefully you would have gotten awfully close. Your SAT scores are decent. If you could retake them and get around a 1900, that would be great. You have a lot of extracurriculars but they have no academic support in them. You do have philosophy club and that's good. However, you need to join more clubs, and possibly join a sport. If you can do all that and still have a good gpa like 3.42, then that'll be great.

Quick Summary:
Aim for higher gpa
join more clubs(prove how active you are in your school community)
get community service hours
join a sport(this along with clubs and a high gpa will get you into college park for sure, but it's not as easy as it sounds. you really have to push yourself.)

*the key is to prove how active you are in your school's community and make sure the activities you perform will be on your transcript/record.

I'm a senior attending Hammond High School of Howard County, Maryland and I just checked my mail and I have been accepted into University of Maryland.

it's not easy getting into college park(cp). Acceptance ratio is every 4 out of 10 students get in.
