Its important to know where you are coming from when you go somewhere. Therefore, my theory is that we, as humans, need a starting point or a point of familiarity. Earth is familiar to us so we use it as a reference point.
Additionally, space exploration is basically a science and science always needs to establish some sort of baseline from which to measure differences found in other environs. Therefore, we reference Earth as the space baseline.

how do we know people are even going to space? In 1967 when Neil Armstrong supposedly went to the moon we didn't even have the technology to make it happen so what makes you so sure we have the technology now?
