The most common way to connect to IBM capatible PC's is the use of an ethernet LAN (local area network). There are two types of these, the hardwired and the wireless; the hardwired is much less expensive but limited in that you have to be able to connect a wire from one PC to the other.

First you need to make sure that both of your PC's have a LAN hardware connector. Most of them have one built into the Mainboard, if not you can purchase a LAN PCI card for as little as $15.00 for each PC. Make sure they match speed, most are 10/100mbs. Then, not being a computer guru and not wanting to "make" a direct cable connection which envolves changing two wires in your CAT5 LAN cable, you will want to purchase an ethernet router (hub). This will run you anywhere from $30 to $80 depending upon what type, store, etc. Make sure that it is the same speed as the LAN hardware for your PC's, once again the normal is 10/100mbs.

Now you need to purchase your CAT5 cable, whatever length you need but if you go over about 25' each way (50' total) you'll need another hub to boost your signal. The cables plug into the LAN connector on your PC to the hub then from the hub to the other LAN connector on your other PC.

Go into you "network connections" under settings on your start menu and follow the instructions. Make sure that your workgroup is the same for both PC's and make sure that you have "sharing" enabled for your hard drives. These are the most common problems with begginers and setting up a LAN.

Setting up a wireless network is the same except that you but wireless cards and routers. This will be about twice the expense and they don't work well through walls.

Have fun, it's not nearly as tough as it use to be.
