Example from me would be Jimi Hendrix. For me his music hits a cord in my soul. I hear the slightest riff and I know that it is Jimi. He is not rock, classic rock, or in any category he is simply Hendrix and his album title "Experience" defines his musical abilities.

There are several in many categories. Yo-Yo Ma is unparalleled as a Cellist. Bela Fleck plays an electric jazz banjo. Buddy Guy is all that blues guitar can be. Aretha Franklin can make your knees weak just with the strength of her voice. Hendrix made a guitar do things that were just unnatural for a guitar. Nearly everyone who has picked one up since has tried to do what he did. No one has; no one can; no one will. Clapton may be the only guitarist I can think of that can play any genre of music, and play it as well as any of that genre's "masters." Johnny Cash made Storytelling Music his stock and trade, and a staple of American music, crossing all boundaries from country to rock to gospel to pop. And of course, no list such as this would be complete without mentioning the strength of performance of Elvis Presley.

Great question. Thanks.

Tom Waits. He is in a class all by himself. His music has been recorded by the likes of the Eagles, Rod Stewart, Rickie Lee Jones and countless others. One listen to Heart Attack and Vine or Small Change and you will know what I mean.
