I understand your computers root drive has been formatted and operating system is reinstalled and it didnt found the proper driver for the graphic card so used a generic driver which has the limitation and so the display is not proper.
You have to provide the proper driver.
If the graphic card is inbuilt you have to use the motherboard setup CD .Most of them has autorun setup routines .So just insert the cd start setup and let it run. It will provide the proper driver not only for graphics card but also for other hardwares .
If the graphics card is not inbuit.Right click on my computer to get system properties look for Hardware and then device driver.Select the display adapter and right click select update drivers. You would need the driver cd for the graphics card.Point to this cd and it will install the required driver.

Right click your desktop -> Goto Properties, Settings tab ->
See what is listed there.
Example for "Display: Plug and Play Monitor on (name of your graphics card"
Screen resolution and color quality all are options you should be able to alter. (and of course after any changes click, apply, and OK)
If the display just says "Plug and Play Monitor" or you cannot change the screen resolution bigger than 800x600 or more than 16-bit (or less) then your video drivers need to be reinstalled.
You can do this by going to:
Control Panel -> System -> Hardware tab -> Click Device Manager -> Click on Display Adapters -> See what is listed.
-> Right-click it, Click on Update Driver
You will probably need your O/S cd-rom then to finish install.
Hope that helps.

i'm not sure what exactly you mean, if you want you computer to have a 1024x768 (resolution) and 16 bit color, you can just change those setting in the properties window, under settings
*Generally one would want to have the bit color at 32 bit or even 64bit (only if you have those options) if you don't, then its really time to get a new computer...lol
*Also try and update your video card's drivers

Define what the problem was before you had it fixed. It sounds like a conflict going on, or some configuration needs to happen.
