Any ideas for making horse toys? I've never seen a horse actually play with a Jolly Ball, but I would like to make or buy something to keep him busy.

It took a while to get my horses to play with the jolly ball- I finally put peanut butter and sometimes honey on the ball to get them attracted to it but after that they were hooked.

Another thing I will do with my equines is take two 2 liter soda bottles and tie them together. With some of my horses I'll have to put something in them to get them attracted to it- like tin foil, a little water, or little jingle bells.

If you have a more confined space such as a stall you can get the 1 liter soda bottles and put jingle bells in them and tie to the corral or stall. My horses go nuts just to hear the little bells.

I never thought much of jolly balls either until I my Miniature colt stole a jolly ball out of my Thoroughbred's paddock. My TB never played with it anyway, and the Mini LOVES it! He has an 'episode' with it at least twice a day, on sunrise and then after his dinner in the evenings. He picks it up (and it is half his size!) and gallops around with it, and when he drops it, he chases it and 'rounds it up' before picking it up and galloping off with it again. Sometimes even my dog joins in on the game! I can throw the jolly ball and my colt will without fail chase it and sometimes even bring it back. He is so hilarious to watch, and even the neighbours said they can watch him for hours because it is so funny.

A horse is better off with a companion than toys, but naturally this isn't always possible. Alternate homemade toys can include soft drink or milk bottles suspended by baling twine. It's very cheap, and horses love to swing them back and forth all day! We used to use them for the racehorses in their stables.

A slightly deflated soccer or basket ball can be used as an inexpensive alternative to a jolly ball, or you can get those children's PVC balls with the pimples all over them, providing something for the horse to get hold of.

All the best with your horse!

You can also get salt licks and mineral blocks that double as toys, and I have seen horses with these at shows and they can stand there playing with them all day. I think they are a bit expensive though.

The jolly balls do work at least my horse likes his .I have 2 jolly balls one big one and a little one .He plays with his ; I keep one hangin in his stall and one for when i turn him out ; he loves takin his nose and pushin it around on the ground when turned out .You can also take a empty milk jug put some gravels in it and hang it up in his stall to play with; try it you might be surprized just how much your horse will like it. I hope this helped . Drema

There's a young stallion at the barn who often plays with a JollyBall.

Also hanging (washed-out) milk cartons in the stall can provide entertainment as long as they are tied securely and where the horse can't get caught.

Have you heard of a Lik It? Horses really seem to love those.

In addition to the milk jug in the stall you can poke a couple of pencil sized holes in the sides or bottom an put in a handful of grain. They smell gets them interested but they can't get more than a few bits out at a time. And there isn't more than about a 1/2 cup so even if they pull it down and empty it there's not enough to hurt them.

positioned him out in a bigger area. he's in basic terms bored of his stall. yet there's a toy which you will positioned feed in and the pony rolls it around to get it out. Get him a chum possibly. My horse Popeye that's 11 remains out in the sphere with my 167 black angus cows.

Just hang a haynet with a vollyball in it. It's good to keep them occupied in a stall, hang it over the door, and never low where a hoof can get caught.
