just a side not to Kev, in Thailand the water temp is around 80°F, which most houses would need a heater to achieve.

The betta did not evolve to living in small puddles. It's impossible. How did the betta get there and how would the fry get to other puddles? They live in streams. Maybe sometimes some get trapped in ponds or pubbles but it's a myth and this has lead to people confining them to little jars. Just because they can live in puddles, doesn't mean they do. It really depends on the temperature of your room. If you have other tropical fish in the tank and they've been doing fine, you'd probably not be harming the betta. But it is best to buy an aquarium thermometer (they're not expensive) and find out the water temperature and work from there. Bettas really prefer warm water.

From my experience you do not have to keep a Betta in a tank with heated water for them to live. However, simply living is not thriving. If they have warmer water (not over say 82F), well balanced water levels and a larger tank they will have better health. However my friend has had her Betta for 3 years in her bathroom in a fish bowl. Her bathroom is probably one of the warmest rooms in the house. You can get a stick on thermometer for a couple dollars to monitor your water. How well do we do when its cold out and the air is gross...

No. As long as the water is room temperature they are fine. To make sure it stays the right temperature you can put a lamp(not a lava lamp) beside the tank.

To the person below.
1.Yes, some betta's DO live in small puddles. This is why they evolved to breath in AIR.
2. Most where bred here in the U.S. and are used to living in small areas of water.
3.Betta's CAN get get over heated.
4.A thermometer is not necessary and is just a waste of time. Betta's can stand room temperature.
You really REALLY need to check your source because it seems to me you do not know what you are talking about.

Not at all. I have 6 Betta's, they each live in a about a 1/2 gallon container. None are heated, they are just at room temp. in my bedroom. I do keep my bedroom at about 72 degrees. Most of my Betta's I have had for over a year. They are seem very happy and routinely blow bubble nests.

As so many others have said, as long as the temperature is in the low 70's it's warm enough without a heater.

how warm is your room? i don't heat them but i live in florida and my room with fish is usually over 72 degrees. they prefer over 75. in general the warmer your betta is the less succeptable to disease he is. you aren't hurting him but he could get sick easier.
