Constipation can be more than just an uncomfortable health issue. It can be defined as a lack of toxin evacuation from the colon that can lead to other more serious, systemic health problems. When toxins are not being eliminated properly, the body seeks alternate pathways to balance its internal chemistry. But these backup systems kicking in can lead to a variety of symptoms appearing that seem completely unrelated to the digestive tract.

There are a variety of traditional home remedies for constipation you can utilize without the help of a doctor.

Exercise

The colon and intestines are muscles, and waste is evacuated by muscle contractions. Therefore, physical movement (i.e. exercise) is of utmost importance in getting the bowels to perform regularly, especially if your lifestyle is a sedentary one. Exercise is a key home remedy that may encourage the gastrointestinal system to stop being sluggish and start moving. Exercise speeds up many bodily systems, including the colon, and keeps your body working like a well-oiled and efficient machine.

Water

Another traditional home remedy is simply consuming larger quantities of water. Increased water consumption cleanses the digestive system and hydrates the intestines. In the large intestine, water is absorbed from the stool as it passes through the digestive tract. If you don't consume adequate fluids, your stools will become hard, dry, and difficult to pass. Make it a goal regarding your personal health to drink 8 to10 8-ounce glasses (or roughly 64 ounces) of water throughout the day to help relieve constipation.

Fiber

Add fiber and high-bulk foods to your diet. Fiber, in essence, is food matter that is not digested but acts as a buffer to push waste out of the body. Increased fiber intake is a popular remedy for constipation. Fiber not only pushes waste out of the body, it "scrubs" the walls of the intestines so mucus and uninvited organisms don't cling to the colon. Some great sources of fiber include: oats, whole ground wheat (not bleached or enriched), ground flax seeds, cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower and broccoli, fiber-rich fruits like apples and pears, and berries embedded with seeds like strawberries and blackberries. Legumes, or beans, are also an excellent source of fiber. Aim for about 25-30 grams of fiber per day to help alleviate constipation.

Beneficial Bacteria

Consume foods rich in beneficial bacteria. These sources of digestion-enhancing bacteria aid with the breakdown of food and with assimilating nutrients into the bloodstream. Bacteria, such as acidodolphus and bifobacterium naturally inhabit the intestinal tract, and aid in the overall functioning of the bowels. Some foods containing these bacteria include: yogurt and kefir, and bacteria-fermented foods like sauerkraut, whey, and unpasteurized apple cider vinegar.

Natural Supplements

Another of the great home remedies for constipation is using a safe, effective supplement to naturally stimulate bowel movements and aid in promoting the intestines. You should be wary of any supplement that works like a laxative, as they frequently contain harsh chemicals or non-organic herbs that could be harmful to intestinal tissue. You should only use products that clean the intestinal walls, promote evacuation of toxins, and encourage a healthy intestinal environment. Oxy-Powder® is a great choice-it's safe, all natural and works quickly. Oxy-Powder® is not habit-forming, and the dosage can be specifically tailored to your individual needs.

Constipation can be safely and effectively treated through traditional home remedies. Through a combination of regular exercise, drinking more water, maintaining a healthy, fiber-rich diet, or taking advantage of a supplement that safely helps the digestive tract function, you can overcome constipation and begin your journey towards optimal colon health.

You can take 1/2 tsp of epsom salts in about 4 oz of water, it tastes terrible, so have some juice handy. It is much easier on your system than any over the counter laxatives ( very little cramping) and it is fast acting. I don't know how far advanced your MS is, but be aware this will work in about 1/2 hour. I've used it for my young (6yr old) daughter because it was gentler. She has an intestinal problem that causes this to be necessary frequently. If it does not work wait a couple hours and repeat the dose. Be sure and drink plenty of liquids so that you do not dehydrate. Epsom salts works because it is amineral that passes through our bodies.

Despite any motivation you may encounter, constipation isn’t actually a disease or a disorder despite some common misconceptions. Constipation is the result of your intestinal system not working as it should and those quick fixes won’t really decipher your digestive dilemma. The definition of constipation isn’t restricted to just the inability to have a bowel movement; but it’s also indicated when you experience painful bowel movements. Going to the restroom should occur with regularity and should be relatively effortless and painless. Anyone with recurring constipation needs to assess their lifestyle first, and then consider seeking help if these symptoms cannot be alleviated via positive changes in diet, exercise, etc.

You could try psyllium husk... you can get it at health food stores and add it to food you prepare or add it to juice and drink it. I first heard of it from my doctor who told me it also helped with nutrient absorption during digestion.

Just be sure to drink plenty of water with the psyllium... my understanding is that it is fiber and absorbs the water to help with digestion... so if you don't drink enough fluids, it will worsen the problem.

Also drinking 3-4 glasses of water first thing when you wake up in the morning, before you eat anything. It doesn't have to be all at once, you can take 10-30 minutes or something, but it works for many people, so would be worth trying.

Good luck to you...

Read the book "The Body's Many Cries for Water" or
go to watercure.com or watercure2.com. A Doctor
discussed at these sights says that drinking 8 to 10
glasses of water today combined with some sea salt
is the answer to many health problems including constipation. I follow his inductions and personally
find his belief about constipation to be true...too little
water in the diet (NOT LIQUIDS...WATER!) results in
constipation and many other complications...try it!
What do you have to lose except constipation?

I used to have this problem when I'd eat prepared (frozen) foods or eating out. I haven't had any issues since I've been cooking with olive oil. I feel healthier, no indigestion, no heartburn, and NO constipation!! If yours is more serious I'd drink lots more water, and juices, and more greens / salads.

Drink milk. Eat bananas. Move around as much as possible. Walking can help big time. Don't eat anything that makes you clog up. No bread, thick oatmeal, thick grits, etc. Eat mostly fruits and veggies.
