The media first. Then religion second. Public education third. We are all programmed. Some have a better program than others. The need to identify with an ideology or product is stronger than our need to be free.
Our economy is dependent on consumerism. The media spends mega billions to influence us to spend. And that is good for employment. Moral structure is mainly predicated on the ability of government to punish if one disobeys the law. Social order is based mainly based on mutual interest and values.

I'm afraid that TV is the culprit, by way of $$. The general message may be best displayed by a recent Super Bowl ad showing two young men at a party confronting a single beer which they both want. One suggests they play rock, paper, scissors for it and the other agrees. On three, the one who suggested the game throws paper, the other throws an actual rock, knocking his opponent down, takes the beer and walks away. The beer can represent anything one desires and any means justifies the acquisition. In our society TV and other ad media are used to create false "needs". Thus we have a glut of gas hogging SUVs, driven by diminutive housewives crowding the streets and parking lots. These people would most likely be served adequately by a mid-sized station wagon or at the very least, a mini-van. The "need" is created, not real, in the interest of short-term corporate profit.

The answer: Religion is the biggest influence in our society and has been for thousands of years.
>In terms of social "Miss-behavior", remember the KKK? Or the Christian Crusades that spread the word of God by giving the people they invaded two choice's: convert or die.
>In terms of Im-moral structure, let's see-we have seen great leadership from Jimmy Swaggart, Ex Pastor Ted Haggard, and everyone's special married-and now I think divorced Christian couple: Jim & Tammy Baker. Tammy was kind enough to give Jan her make up and mascara secrets.
>In terms of Social Dis-order: The Big Three do one thing VERY well and that is teaching "intolerence" and how to be "judgemental". Catholics are kept in line by the fear of punishment. If you commit sins and you are under 16 years old, Father Ben Dover determines the punishment. If you are an adult, they keep you in line by reminding you that they can make more Crusafixes.
Religion needs to be put in the trash bins-In order to continue evolving and to get closer to God, I think we need to re-awaken the spirituality we all have in us and to accept and love ourselves for who we are.

Television! It is spreading the world over. Folks who don't have enough money for food have a TV. It influences everything we do: what we eat, what we buy, what we talk about at work, what we think of as common cultural references (Seinfeld, anyone?). There is hardly a place on the globe that hasn't been touched by this influence.
