My husband and I are thinking of moving back yo Mumbai, but I have never been out of US. How do I find out what it's like there? How much money do we need to live a NICE life there? We are in LA now. How will it compare? Is it a good place to raise kids? We have a 5 year old boy. Can anyone help me?

It's a great place to live - we have all kinds of facilities here and as far as kids go, there are great schools - even international schools apart from the ICSE board (which I consider the best), CBSE and SSC board....there are also a wide range of hobbies you can make your child learn.....

It's so rapidly developing that you'd probably find a mall, a market, boutiques and multiplexes in every area. Since it is the financial capital and an important trade centre, we get everything here from chinese goods to imported designer brands such as versace.

Travel is fast and convenient and by and large reliable. Thoiugh others may have different comments on this, the fact remains that the trains are very punctual, the public transport frequency is great and if u cannot afford a cab, you can take an autorickshaw.

It's also a cultural hub so whether it's film or theatre or art or salsa nights - there's something for everyone

Yes, the cost of living IS high but for those coming from america or the US, you will find it reasonable as each $ is = around Rs. 45

You may find it a bit polluted...but which metro isn't?

I hope this has helped you to make your decision....good luck......

Hey Dana,
Even I was born in the US but i Have lived in Mumbai for a year and let me tell you soemthing it did change alot..in good and bad ways...

First of all there are alot of malls and theaters coming there but regarding the malls..the clothes are shitty compared to what we have in the US and quality wise. They do have stores like Esprit and Guess but the type of clothes they ahve there are not alot of variety and it seems like it was on clearance from the US so I think you get the picture.

Now they have grocery stores like the ones in the US but only 2-3 major ones..one is the newest which is Hypercity which is in Malad and the other one is Big Bazaar..but again you are not going to find the same food as you do in the US,

In terms of Living wise...I prefer living in Andheri West Lokhandwala or Bandra Pali Hills.
The rent for for apts in Andheri W can range from 20,000 Rs-40,000 Rs a month and in Pali Hills more than 40,000 Rs.
and you have to pay a large amount of deposit unless you know the person and the commission you pay to the agent is supposed to be a month rent but some a**h**** take 2 month rent.

Travellling-I STRONGLY suggest you get a car & yes there is alot of pollution!

So if you are absolutely moving to Mumbai here are some tips I suggest...
Buy as much clothes as you can from here...
Know where you want to live
Buy alot of sunscreen.

and fourth good luck.
