While my first bass only cost $50, was a short-scale, and a cheap Teisco copy of Paul McCartney's Hofner bass, I still used it for gigs until I upgraded to a Fender Mustang. That was also a short-scale, and for a beginner, I think that was best. I don't know what scale the Walmart basses are, but as long as you can play on it, then go ahead and consider it, along with used basses from a local music store. Some companies, like Fender, have a lower priced series of guitars and basses, and they are usually sold with amps, straps, etc. in boxes around Christmas time. You might look for a Fender dealer that has some to clear out, and try to get a big discount on it. Rule of thumb for most music stores, is "A" mark: They pay half of retail. If the bass sells for $199.99 list, then they paid $100 (or usually even less!) for it to begin with.

Play on some, don't forget to use an amp, and compare. A better playing bass will be easier, especially for a beginner. But I would not rule out a Walmart bass without trying it and comparing it to others.

Good luck, and play music!!

No, don't buy those cheapos or imitations. It won't give you a good headstart on your bass playing.

A good choice to start will be to get a second-hand or used bass guitar of good brand such as Fender, Ibanez, Washburn, etc. My first bass was a used Washburn then I moved to a precision Ibanez. Buying imitations might hinder you from playing well and improving. Go to Yahoo Auctions or eBay and search for used quality bass guitars.
