You need a DVD ripper. I use Handbrake. Its free but it's only for Mac. If you have a Mac you can rip it to MP4.

First of all, download DVD Shrink 3.2, and shrink your DVD into .VOB files that the next program you will download can convert. Download Videora iPod Converter. It will encode videos of .VOB format, and many other formats too. The converted files are in .MP4 format, which will play on an iPod. The Videora program will also have a prompt where you can copy the converted files into your iPod, given that it is connected. Keep in mind that only the iPod Video can play videos. The Nano can't, and some people say that you can. Even if you can, it would be a real pain to watch something on that tiny screen. Anyway, once the files are copied, check out your iPod to see if the converted videos are there.
Good luck.

Yes, you need a dvd ripper to bypass the copyright protect and copy your dvd to hard drive.
iPod accepts only MP4 format video, but DVD is MPEG-2 format, so you need to rip your DVD to MP4 format, then you can drag them to iTunes and sync to iPod. I recommend 'DVD to iPod Ripper' to you, it can rip DVD to iPod, I always use it to convert my home DVD to iPod, very easy to use and works well for me, this software has 24*7 hours online technical support, really help, you may download for a trial.
