I'm wondering if there is a safe and reliable way of getting from Santa Cruz, CA to San Jose, CA very late at night (2am or so). I could rent a car, but I'm worried about driving through the mountains via Route 17 that late at night. Any suggestions?

At 2am? The only thing I can recommend is a taxi or perhaps one of those airport shuttle vans...

From downtown San Jose you can catch the 17 express bus and it will get you to Santa Cruz Boardwalk

17 is not that scary if you drive close to the speed limit and the suggested speed for the curves.

I don't think there is much demand for a bus at those hours in the morning.

here check out their bus schedules-Amtrak Highway 17 Express

from santa cruz to SJ,, I think the earliest bus leaves 4:35a(weekdays)
5:50a(weekends)
you might have to rent a car for anything earlier, unless you find a carpool buddy- goodluck....
