1) The cavities are ventricles, and they are filled with cerebrospinal fluid; they are connected with the spinal column and circulate protective fluid. A blockage of the ventricular system causes hydrocephalus ("water on the brain") and requires surgical intervention and the implantation of a shunt to reroute the fluid.
