1) The cavities are ventricles, and they are filled with cerebrospinal fluid; they are connected with the spinal column and circulate protective fluid. A blockage of the ventricular system causes hydrocephalus ("water on the brain") and requires surgical intervention and the implantation of a shunt to reroute the fluid.
2) The convolutions are most prevalent in human beings, therefore are related to intelligence with the various areas of the cerebral cortex being the sites for different voluntary activities such as speech, memory, logic...
