I believe the daylight savings time for past years occured at the last week of March. So, why do they change it this year?

They are right...to save energy. To put it more basically, when we go on daylight savings time earlier there are more hours of daylight throughout our day. More sunlight = less need to lights on = saving tons of energy just by moving it forward several weeks.

Vincent, that's one of the dumbest replies I've seen. It's clearly much, much easier for Congress to pass a law setting dates for DST, than to somehow induce 300 million individuals to change deeply ingrained lifelong habits by merely asking them to voluntarily do so -- especially when in so many cases their work days are synchronized to various events and interactions with people all over the world.

It was a political decision, it is supposed to help reduce the power usage, or so they claim.
I mean, noon is supposed to be when the sun is at its zenith, now it will be at its zenith (assuming you are at the middle of your time zone) at 1 PM for most of the year, so what was wrong with the concept of asking everyone to change their habit a bit, like go to bed one hour earlier and get up one hour earlier without changing the clock?
And what is wrong with the concept of staggering work hours so that not everyone is on the street at the same time, in traffic jams? That is where the energy is wasted.
But of course, it takes a politician to devise a non working solution to a problem no one really had.

Only because the US congress decided to change it. They think it will help to save energy. Personally, I doubt it.
