The answer to this question can be found in your textbook: History of the Filipino People. The book was written by a professor at the University of the Philippine Islands. I believe the book is also part of your curriculum for second year high school at least it was for my wife.

In short, Filipinos never developed a sense of nationalism or patriotism. They strive to mimick Americans because of our massive wealth, personal freedom, and standard of living. It seems they cannot develop the discipline within their own country necessary to further the country. Only when they are forced to be disciplined under foreign governments do they have any discipline.

I have traveled in the Philippines, and it is a naturally wealthy country with many unexploited resources. If the RP government started protecting natural resources, the filipino people, and developed some foreign policy that made sense instead of kow-tow'ing to foreign nations they would be much better off. However, your government is plagued with corruption from the highest office, your president (GMA) to the lowest offices (LTO) in the city governments.

The main reason that filipinos want to leave the Philippines; and many are glad to go any place from the Philippines including Japan, UAE, U.K., Australia, Korea, etc, is because they feel that the situation in their own country is hopeless and there is nothing left to do but escape.

The U.S. is the wealthiest nation on Earth and so many people get stars in their eyes about coming here, not just filipinos. We currently have more than 8 million illegal Mexicans in the United States. Many filipinos also admire the industriousness, personal discipline, and courage of Americans.

The brightest part of dismal situation is that the Filipino people started the "people power" revolution in 1986 when they ousted former president Marcos. That event had a ripple effect around the world against many totalitarian governments. Now if the filipino people would just unite with one another and throw off the yoke of your current lousy government, building a new one up from scratch on the backs of honest people, then you would have an admirable island paradise, and a first world country. The Philippines also has the power to be the agricultural breadbasket to Asia providing food to land starved countries like Japan and Korea that have money but not enough arable land to produce food for all the people in the country.

For most people it is just about the $$. Wages here are too low and even with a college degree from a top university and a full time job, the pay is still too low. America (and Canada as well) offer jobs with good pay as well as benefits (insurance, sick leave, overtime, etc). In addition, if you obtain citizenship, an American passport makes travelling a lot easier.

If you talk to a lot of OFW's, they plan to return here when they retire (or when their contract is up). It is not about the culture or wanting to emulate Americans as much as it is the desire to provide a better life for their family.

Labor here is so cheap, it is insane.

I advise you to filter most of the opinions that you read. The U.S. dollar is weak for now but it will rise again depending on the results of the up coming Presidential elections.
President Bush is the reason why the U.S. dollar is weak.

You can still make your life better if you live, work and get an education in the U.S

Be careful on how you teke on advise from people. Sometimes you have to do your own research on information.

Some people speak from their own negative fustrations.

America is not anymore green. Look at the exchange rate, it's about 48:1 Look somewhere else, where the rate is 60:1, 90:1 or 100:1. You'll be richer. Think big while you're still young. Do not be so enamored with America. They don't want you there.

we are still looking for the day that going to america will be a career choice and not the only opportunity to find decent work.
as of now, the minimum wage in the philippines ranges from two hundred pesos to three hundred seventy five pesos a day( 4 dollars to 7.50 dollars per day) compared to 6.50 dollars per hour in america( 325 pesos per hour).
your best option would be to take up nursing and choose the path of hundreds of thousands of filipinos who have gone ahead of you.

Oh the great american dream!
Filipinos have the tendency to follow the trends of others & trying to look for the greener pasture.
