It is rumored that soap was discovered below sacrificial temples in ancient times. The women noticed that the animal fat and ash mix made washing clothes easier by getting the soil out of the fabric. So, I guess the animals were probably cattle. Life's hard when you are a bovine because your fat is a good soap when mixed with lye and a little salt and cooked, cooled, and left to cure for about a month in a cool, shady place.
