Don't know if this is necessarily the best place to stay, but we stay at a campground called Travelland. Off State Rt 2. Tel# 800-875-1044. We stayed in cabins that have a double bed & too bunk beds. Bring own bedding. Has outdoor pool and pancake & porkie breakfast. Across the street is MCDonald's & I think Subway nearby too. About 6 mi S of the park. Inexpensive compared to hotels, but still have a roof over your head in case it rains. And Hwy 2 can lead you to other attractions. Hope this helps.

Stay at a nearby county owned park. It has a lake, and they tell me it is a lovely park to camp at. Also you can go to the state park. Try ReserveAmerica.com or Recreation.gov for SC parks.
