Thermostat

First, Is the a/c unit actually still running or is it just the blower fan running making you think the whole a/c system is still running?

Is the thermostat "fan" selector switch set to on? change it back to auto.

Is only the blower running but not the outdoor unit and the thermostat switch IS set to "Auto"?
Probably a stuck relay in the furnace

Is the outside unit actually running and thermostat is satisfied?
Probably is a welded contactor in the condensor unit.

Is the entire system still running even though the thermostat is satisfied?
Probably a bad t-stat, stuck relay or a bad circuit board.
Possibly a shorted control wire.

If you have a heat pump, then there is whole slew of other problems it could be.

If you don't have any experience with electricity, don't mess with it, electricity is DANGEROUS.
Don't take someones advice about what wires "it should be" or "could be". There are wire codes that manufactuer's and installers adhear to but you just can't be too sure you have the right ones unless you have experience. You can get yourself fried.

Call a reputable HVAC company in your area to have it looked at.

Bruce is absolutely correct about the contactor welding. I had the exact same problem and after 3 years of $200 monthly elec bills i told the air conditioning guy to just humor me and replace the dam contactor and VIOLA hasn't stuck on since and that was after the tards replaced the thermostat 9 times and told me i was wrong every time. Thermostat is $10 try that first then now you will know what the problem is. Answer me this does the same thermostat control the heater too? if it works fine for the heat (turns on and off) then it is DEFINITELY the contactor.

Possible reasons:The compressor contactor is stuck or welded in the closed position,or the low voltage thermostat wire is shorting to another wire. To attempt repair is dangerous, unless you are knowledgable in electricity. If you want to proceed regardless of the risk heres how to check it. !st locate the low voltage wires that are outdoors going into the unit (thermostat wire).Removal of unit cover plate is often required. It is held in place by 3or4 small screws. 2nd locate the small wires, they are reconizable because they are very small and brightly colored wires., and will have wire-nuts on them.Locate the red wire and undo the wire nut, pull the red wire apart. If the unit continues to run then the fault is in the contactor and will require replacing.Be careful when you pull the red wires apart ,even though they are 24 volts a shock can still result and give you a jolt.
