Hey, I was talking to my mother about the HP books, and she said that there are side-books to it. They're not written by Rowling, but they're suppose to be pretty good, and they aren't sold in stores, only on the internet. Does anyone know what these books are called? Or have any clue as to what I'm talking about?

No, not fanfiction, I've read quite enough of those... lol. These are more of spinoff books, written by a true author.

Not quiddich or fantastic beasts. It's a spinoff about the other characters in the books, like Snape and stuff, and how they tie into the HP books.

Your mother is mistaken; JKR has never authorized any other writer to use her setting. There have been a few attempts at scholarship for the mass market, books about the science or philosophy or theology of HP, but these books have been unauthorized. And several fan authors have written their own stories, but these too are completely unauthorized by JKR. Sorry.

It sounds like she's referring to the many many Harry Potter fanfics that are available online. Harry Potter fans write their own stories, some of great quality and some are terrible. You can look at places like fanfiction.net for examples. Be warned, the quality level dramatically varies.

I haven't heard of this. I'd be astonished if JKR and her publisher would allow anyone else to cash in on the Harry Potter characters.

There are no *official* character spin-offs. If you are looking for something of this sort, I would suggest fanfic Zines etc.
