My "check engine" light has been on permanently since 1999. I took it in and they told me if the Oxygen sensor (whatever that is). My car is old, but still works... and that light is still on.

The worst thing would be to ignore it! The light goes on because something is not making sense to the control unit. The longer you go the worse it could get. If an oxygen sensor is bad and you keep driving it could run lean and overheat the motor.

Engine could be ready to seize up...can't think of anything worse than THAT.

It's more likely time to get an oil change...assuming it's an older car...and the light can be re-set by the mechanic.

I know that the last time one of my cars did that, I took it in and found out the head gasket was blown. Hopefully that is not the case for you, but I would get it checked out.

Buy yourself a OBDII analyzer, they are only about
a 150.00 You can get them in walmart in the auto
section or get one at Autozone. It will save you a lot
of money by telling you what the codes mean!

Low oil pressure or low oil in the crankcase. Burn that engine up and that costs thousands to rebuild.
