The telephone. We would not have the internet, mobile phones, fax machines or dare i say it no X-box live!! With faster communication and transfer of knowledge the telephone has also speeded up the progress of many other inventions. Alex G Bell i salute you!!

Some of the best inventions were never actually "patented". The Hula Hoop wasn't and the formula for Coke isn't.

the WHEEL
don't be astonished at my answer , but it is the basis to all inventions all over the ages!even nowdays machines and instruments!
we can't live without any wheel either it is a vehicle or a clock(gears) or pulleys or anything else!
EDIT:
oh i missed the word patented as i am astigmatic i always miss lines and letters , sorry! if u want a patented invention let it be the electric lamp ,the transistors and telephones , they have facilitated our modern life!

From where I sit it was the transistor. In the mid 1940’s a team of scientists working for Bell Telephone Labs in Murray Hill, New Jersey, were working to discover a device to replace the then present vacuum tube technology. Vacuum tubes were the only technology available at the time to amplify signals or serve as switching devices in electronics. The problem was that they were expensive, consumed a lot of power, gave off too much heat, and were unreliable, causing a great deal of maintenance.
The scientists that were responsible for the 1947 invention of the transistor were: John Bardeen, Walter Brattain, and William Shockley. Bardeen, with a Ph.D. in mathematics and physics from Princeton University, was a specialist in the electron conducting properties of semiconductors. Brattain, Ph.D., was an expert in the nature of the atomic structure of solids at their surface level and solid-state physics. Shockley, Ph.D., was the director of transistor research for Bell Labs.
Their original patent name for the transistor was: “Semiconductor amplifier; Three-electrode circuit element utilizing semiconductive materials.” In 1956, the group was awarded the Noble Prize in Physics for their invention of the transistor. In 1977, John Bardeen was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

it's the fluorescent bulb or anything that has to do with modern lighting because using candles and oil lamps seem inconvenient for our generation's daily activities... also, it would be too dark to walk in the streets after sunset, even with the aid of the moon and the stars...

I think the steam engine was the most important invention, but I don't know if there was a patent on it at any time... the steam engine made the industrial revolution possible and led to the more modern society that we live in today...
