Oh, I think you should stop watching old episodes of I'll Fly Away.
Mobile is a gracious town with a pretty lively social scene.
One thing to be aware of when you go...the town is highly stratified between old money and the rest. So you might want to consider living on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay. It's a different lifestyle there. And the winters are much nicer than Canada, believe me (Originally from Chicago here).
As far as the race thing goes, I'm white so I can't really speak to that, but I have to say that the race relations here just aren't what I expected when I moved here. Everything seems pretty cordial, as if all that stuff was put behind them years ago. Most of the race stuff only seems to come out at election time, oddly enough at the behest of the prominent black local politicians.
Regarding the Canadian who answered your post...there is no bias I've noticed against Canadians at all. In fact, you'll probably find that Southerners are far more hospitable to a Canadian than a guy like me from Chicago. Just remember that you're going into a different culture, respect their ways, and they'll respect you right back.
Oh, and here's another trick. Take an interest in college football here. You don't have to watch it a lot, but at least be somewhat interested. Southerners are crazy about it (kind of like Hockey in Canada), and picking a team (Pick Auburn over Alabama...better fans) will get you invited to a lot of gameday parties.

I don't live in Alabama but I live in the south. You'll be okay. Not everyone from the south is racist and psycho. Most of us are very nice, hence the saying "southern hospitality". Mobile is a big city though, so make sure you take the same safety precautions you normally would. Have fun getting used to the humidity! Good luck!

Uh...O my God. Are you asking this question to see what kind of responses you get?
Yes. There has been a long history of people killing blacks in the deep south because of their race. This is pretty much over now, but a lot of old ideas still linger pretty strong. To top it off, they do not like people from Canada very much (scary personal experience) so you are screwed double time. I've heard from people who have been there the place is still pretty messed up and scary.
Hey, don't vote me down. I've lived through this.

Racism is painfully alive and obvious in the south. I live in Louisiana and know of a few business owners that are still shut down waiting for segregation to be legal before they reopen. Ridiculous.
I would not advise moving to Mobile. It's hot, it stinks, and its all industry there. It might be better for you to move to a surrounding suburban area.

Mobile, Alabama is a good place to go in Alabama...You're near the Gulf of Mexico...its pretty down there...Also, the civil rights tension has pretty much been over with for a while...Sure, everybody has biases...but not to the point of violence or abuse anymore...There are laws against it too...
