The movie with Liam Neeson and Catherine Zeta Jones. I just wonder what other people's perceptions were of this movie. The same director also did Twister which seems to be a disaster movie, but I thought it was hilarious. Is that his MO?

Just for the record - I thought it was a great comedy movie, nothing scary about it. Beautiful architecture, amusingly creepy children carvings, and a great ball of laughs.

You're more or less correct in your assumption. The newer version of The Haunting is a botched mess of unbelievale situations, thoroughly bad acting (even from Neeson) and some ugly shock moments having little or no connection with the supposed situation. It is funny pretty much in the same way that Plan 9 From Outer Space is funny.
The original film, "The Haunting" (released in 1963), based on Shirley Jackson's classic terror novel, ,"The Haunting of Hill House", is an excellent and gripping tale, which doesn't need gore to give you a good case of the creeps.
