I have tried stuff like "Preen" , but it never really worked very good and it was expensive too, so i never really put it down much. But I get so many weeds as well, which i have to go back and spray with round up or pull them.
My neighbor says she puts down the basic ingrediant called "Treflan" and spreads this small granular product over the areas in her beds and she does not ever get ANY weeds. She also says that it last for over a year.
Anybody know about this?

Please don't use those awful chemicals..If you are going to use mulch, use old newspapers. get them a little wet so they dont blow away. Tear our where the plant goes. Use 4or5 sheets, small or large pieces are okay. just make sure they overlap and then put your mulch down. the paper will decompose so you'll have to scrape it back next season and put down new paper, but it's good for the soil. You can just replace it bits and pieces. If a weed grows just use a sharp knife and cut it out when it is small..

Careful doing that. I agree with the first answerer. Newspaper (just don't use the glossy pages) and mulch well. Some pre-emergent herbicides will kill plants that are not well established.

just use extra mulch. if you thicken your mulch coverage on a few things will grow very poorly on top of it and that is easily removeable.
