Name one american who has ever pulled off a convincing Australian or British accent ...... I mean seriously just get an actor from that country and be done with it. I cringe whenever I hear an American 'fake' an accent on Television ......

Renee maybe, although thats only 1 actor out of the hundreds who have attempted it. Oh and Gwyneth doesnt count. She couldnt have more British roots and ties if she was born and raised here.

Well, I assume you're Aussie. Probably to your ears, an Aussie pulling off an American accent sounds like the real McCoy. Being an American, however, I can spot an British or Aussie pulling off an American accent. Few can really do it well, I do think Hugh Laurie does a great job as the ever-grouchy genious Dr. House, and that Charlize Theron has mastered it well (I'm well aware that she's South African, but you get the point). Accents and how well they pass are relative, so what's passable to one set of ears might be terrible to another.

Second thing I must note is that most movies have American settings, so I guess it never became priority for American actors to learn other accents. A lot of British and Australian actors are sometimes cast in those American roles, so they are forced to learn to speak with American accents. But leave an American long enough in British or Australian settings (usually from childhood), and they'll pick it up like nothing. Example would be Mel Gibson.

Gwyneth Paltrow usually does a well-respected British accent - "Shakespeare in Love" being one example.
