FSH is follicle stimulating hormone. It is produced in the anterior pituitary gland; the pituitary is the second-most important endocrine gland in your body apart from the brain (yes, the brain is also a gland)! High levels of FSH in the female ovary stimulate the maturation of an egg. With its partner LH (luteinizing hormone), FSH is essential for ovulation.
Birth control pills contain combinations of hormones (most often derivatives of estrogen and progesterone) that depress levels of FSH. This prevents ovulation. Fertility drugs, on the other hand, increase levels of FSH--thereby triggering ovulation, and often maturation of many eggs at once. That's why women who are on fertility drugs often end up with multiple children.
And yes, it does play an important role in the male testes too--it is essential for sperm formation.

FSH is Follicle Stimulating Hormone. It affects the function of the ovaries in women, or sperm production in men, and testing for it may be a part of examinations for fertility problems in men and women, pituitary gland problems, or puberty issues.

it means FOLLICLE STIMULATING HARMORE. it is a gonadotropic harmone of the pituitary gland that stimulates the growth of follicles in the ovaries(female) and also induces the formation of sperm in the testis(male).
