Ragtime grew out of Tin Pan Alley. It was piano - very swingy and unusual for the time. White musicians soon took it up and made it popular. They became rich and famous; the original black artists generally stayed poor and unknown to the public.
But Ragtime was the embryo out of which grew rock-n-roll, doo-wop, scat, swing, rythym.
