Don't put diapers - nearly everyone at my shower with my first son (I am his father, btw) bought diapers and we didn't run out at all. I'd say formula, if you don't intend to breast feed that is. The thing we never had enough of was bathing items, such as soaps, shampoos, lotions etc. Also, I know I said no diapers, but wipes is a good thing as that is what people forget usually when it comes to diapers.

Everything that you know you will need. If this is a first baby and you don't have the big things ask for them. Maybe they can go in and get one or two for you if people aren't loaded. Also, if you know a parent of someone is buying a large item, don't put it dow. Never buy new if you have someone to give you the big things, they grow up soo fast ans they don't wear a lot of things out and cribs can be re used many times, just clean it well. So, always what you need, even gift certificatea because you will need diapers for many years. lol Have a happy baby.

Practical things. Bibs, t-shirts, socks, blankets, sheets...Family can go together and get bigger items such as swing, high chair, car seat. If you know the sex of the baby and you don't want a bunch of clothes, be sure to let your guests know or that's all you;ll get..You'll have tons of outfits your baby will never wear cuz they grow out of them so fast.

Ask the hostess to get you a diaper cake!! They make great shower decorations....have one loaded up with baby essentials (gas drops, Infant Tylenol, receiving blankets, personalized onesies, teethers, toys, pacifiers, thermometer, booties, ETC)

I make them, by the way!!

I got lots of clothes and diapers for my shower. but the thing that saved us as silly as it sounds was peekaboo elmo. he was such an active baby it allowed us free hands to make calls and do chores. and it taught him to smile and laugh early. its what i get for every shower now!

Along with the most common things, I would put the most uncommon things like bibs, socks, bath items, feeding items..etc. A lot of people don't think about socks or bibs.
Diapers (all sizes) - they aren't cheap.

Diapers, wipes, and toiletries!!! You can do without just about everything else, but those are the things you are going to need the most, and end up eating up your paycheck!
