Microwave oven
A medium-sized pot (with lid)
A frying pan
Cooking utensils - spatula, large spoon, can opener, mixing bowl
Eating utensils - forks, knives, spoons, plates, bowls, glasses/cups (usually it's best to have more than one set of dishes, unless you like washing your one dish all the time), Tupperware containers (for any leftovers), water/juice jug
Oven mitts
Cleaning stuff - Large sponge, broom, dustpan, mop, pail, toilet brush, favourite cleanser (eg: Mr. Clean), garbage bags, paper towels, SOS pads (they're awesome!), dish detergent, vaccuum cleaner
Garbarge can
Toilet Plunger
Furniture - table, chairs, couch, bed, dresser, tv, lamps, etc.
Curtains (not all apartments come with these or you could just hang a sheet over the window instead ...)
Bed sheets, pillow cases and blankets
Clothes Hangers
Calendar
Clothes hamper(s)
Laundry detergent, fabric softener, bleach, dryer "Bounce" sheets
A schwack-load of quarters (chances are you will have paid on-site laundry ...)
Personal hygiene products - toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, razor (no matter whether you're a guy or a gal!), shaving cream, deodorant, cologne/perfume, kleenex, toilet paper (in a pinch, toilet paper can be subbed for kleenex, but I wouldn't want to try the reverse ...)
Bath Mat
Towel(s)
And I am sure there is much more, but I am fresh out of ideas ...

Get a pad of paper. Close your eyes and imagine yourself going through an entire day. When you think of things you need but don't have, write them down. Find out what comes with the apartment before you buy anything.
After you've started your list, keep it handy. As you actually go through your day, think, do I need this? Write it down. Don't stress too much about forgetting anything. Anything you forget will become obvious in the first day or two ;-) Then you can start a new list!
Congratulations, and good luck!

-Toilet Paper
-Cleaning Supplies (Dust Spray, bathroom cleaner etc.)
-Laundry Soap
-Light Bulbs
-Cooking Utensils

-Broom and dust pan

small stuff like toilet paper, windex, toothpaste, dish soap, plunger and other of the other stuff you took for granted while living with your parents. beware, because all of those cheap items add up quick. A microwave, toaster and coffee pot is a must.
