It takes energy to cool the air down, in the same way your fridge/freezer wouldn't work if it wasn't plugged in.

There will be a noticeable load on the engine when the compressor is running, but as long as the engine is not underpowered, there will be only a slight MPG loss. Some say this will be offset by less drag when the windows are rolled up as opposed to down. If you have A/C, I say, let 'er blow.. I'd want to be comfortable...

It takes 5 to 10 horsepower to run the compressor,depending on the ambient temperature.The hotter the ambient,the higher the head pressure will be,requiring more horsepower.

The same reason it burns more fuel when you keep your foot in it, you are exerting another load on the engine. More load, more fuel.

you are using your engine to turn a pump, when the air cond. is off the engine does not have to work as hard. thus use less gas.

because it is belt driven by the engine and it takes power to run it when it is kicked on.
