I want Liberals and Conservatives to answer this one! I have heard many people tell me that it is a persons obligation to give back to society. Is building economic growth through economic freedom not doing that? Is adding to the strength of the dollar bad? Why do people want to use a corrupt and inefficient government system which only drains the amount of goods and services through the competitive market? Is 35% of our economy too little or too much? Do you believe rich people put their money under their beds or do they place it back in the economy through the banking system helping to build new business, homes, and to help people finance cars? Please keep this civil, it should be a great topic to discuss!

The government needs some means of raising money to pay for national defense and other essential things.
Having said that, the current taxes are unfair and excessive. A fair tax system would tax every citizen the same amount..not the same percentage...the same amount..like $10,000 a year. That's fair since every one has the same opportunity. When carpool with a group of friends on a trip, do you split up the cost of gas evenly or do the wealthier friends pay more? Everybody is going on the same trip. It's up to each person what they make of it. I've heard the argument that wealthier people have more at stake so they should pay more tax to protect what they have at stake. This makes sense also, in which case a flat tax of the same percentage is fair and more practicle than a fixed amount tax.
I'm not very wealthy by American standards, but it still bothers me when politicians (or anybody) say the rich aren't paying their fair share. That is absurd. The rich are paying far more than their fair share. We should be thanking them.
To answer your question, yes, I think taxes are like slavery to the extent that they are excessive.

How do you propose funding government if not by taxes. No, it is not slavery, The more you make the more taxes you pay, however you still keep more money. Rich and the very rich have been taking their money off shore and that is the problem. Paying your fair share is important so that the government can protect us from others, educate the masses. ect. Without taxes and the government broke the society would fall into anarchy with every man for himself. I know your mind is made up and I have wasted my time but at least you will get one honest answer.

Taxes = Legalised stealing by the government so they in return can mismanage your hard earned money.

die_laffi...: I find your comments very naive. If what you say is correct then things would be entirely different. Meanwhile, our roads have potholes, up north they're all damaged due to ice (funny how the Swiss roads don't have that problem, our schools...... wow.... our classrooms consists of trailers, etc. etc. etc.... Here's where our money really goes: Politicians and other countries!

Another thing just crossed my mind....... - what about our 3rd world power grid??? Above ground power lines?????? - They are identical to the ones in countries like India and Ethiopia, resulting in loss of electricity in snow storms, hurricanes, - even small ones, thunder storms etc.... Another nice example of our tax dollar hard at work!!!! I've lived in Europe and in Hong Kong for over 20 years and have NEVER had a power failure - even during a direct hit category 5 Hurricane (Typhoon).

I think rich people put their money in offshore accounts that nobody else can touch. They don't put it back into our economy - if they do run businesses, they try to eliminate as many U.S. workers as possible through downsizing and outsourcing, and when they're forced to hire American workers, they're skimpy and grudging with the benefits, like health insurance and paid leave.

I think taxes are the dues we pay to have a society. Look at it this way: You can have a private swimming pool in your own backyard, and pay to have it constructed, pay to have a fence put around it, and either pay a pool maintenance company to keep it clean and safe, or else do all the work yourself.

Or....you can pay a membership fee to share a pool with your neighborhood, which costs a lot less than having your own private pool.

Either share and pay less, or keep it all to yourself and pay more money. Those are the choices.

I agree that much of our taxes are badly mismanaged, but some taxes are necessary, if you want roads, schools, police and fire. What I don't like is a huge deficit being created for this war where thousands of our troops are killed each year (this is coming from a military veteran who feels for our troops and don't want to see them sacrifice their lives in vain so a few get rich).

It's funny how conservatives are so against big government, but what about this hugely inflated military and war process?

Are we not giving back to society simply by showing up to work every day for 10 to 12 or more hours . I believe that full fills my obligation. If you want something go out and earn it , do not beg borrow or steal it !!
Do you consider a rich person someone who is financially rich ?
As far as taxes go , I pay taxes each payday , the system is ancient . So please do not get me started on taxes . One of my best friends is an IRS agent and he agrees it is ancient .

Every single dime of our income taxes goes directly into the hands of the families that own the PRIVATE Federal Reserve Banks.

The Federal Reserve System is a 100 year old money scam, and the Federal Income Tax on wages is illegal. Our labor is our private property, and every year our government shakes each of us down for a part of it.

Taxes (at least in the USA) pay for a lot of VERY necessary services for the citizenry.
Police & firemen, Schools, road maintainence, none of these would exist without taxes.

Do you prefer that none of these things exist?
